One of the things we’ve discovered is that our members are a trendsetting bunch. And since one of the hottest trends on line is the mobile internet, and specifically mobile marketing, you should know that we’re planning on some cool tools to make your mobile sites work better, look better, and build faster.
And since everything we do here i
s based on WordPress, that means the development of mobile website themes and mobile website plugins.
You might not know this, but as of 2012 (and perhaps as early as this year, given the huge success of the iPhone 4s), we’ve finally come to the point where HALF of all internet traffic is generated by mobile devices.
That’s right — There are as many people accessing the internet via their cell phones and tables as there are people who get online via desktops and laptops. Amazing.
Dan and I started talking about this today (November 2, 2011) on our webinar, and we got some great feedback about our plans — and a few great ideas.
We’ve added those “wordpress for mobile” ideas to the ideas we already have on our “big idea list”, but we know that we can’t think of everything (though, we try). So we’ve got a few questions for you.
- Are you planning on building a mobile website, or converting your existing site to work better on mobile?
- What have you seen in existing mobile wordpress themes that you don’t like?
- What features do you think we should add to our upcoming mobile theme?
- What kinds of cool things would you like to see us do with a wordpress plugin for mobile?
I’ll give you one idea right out of the idea pile: We need a way to vary the content so that if the user is on a mobile device, they see different text on a page than if they are on a desktop or laptop computer. That way, you can easily eliminate certain photos, or even javascript content, that you either don’t want or that doesn’t display properly on a mobile device.
So, what do YOU need on a mobile site? What would be REALLY COOL to see when viewing your site on an iPhone or Android? Got any ideas? Share them here, and we’ll add them to our list for an upcoming theme or plugin.
Thanks, in advance, for all your great ideas.
-Mark
P.S. By the way…even if you think your idea is silly, or not a big deal, or off the wall crazy, post it here as a comment anyway. Why? Because your idea may actually be FANTASTIC! And, even if it isn’t, it may inspire another idea from another member, or from one of us. So whatever’s on your mind, write it here. Now.
Cool!

Howdy guys, Don’t know if I the first and only one to comment or not, but having a site that wears both hats would be great. Meaning, you can have the content for a desktop/laptop viewing of your site, but your site also somehow recognizes a mobile device and gives a mobile friendly layout. Kind of like the smallbiz theme from Don Campbell. The limitation with his is that the recognition only exists on the home page, not any other pages. So, if you are working in the offline consulting field, and have a client that has several services and you work on a site for them expanding on each of these services on it’s own page, his theme doesn’t recognize a mobile device except on the first page. It would be nice if a theme could do that on all pages, or selected pages. I’m sure not a techy, so don’t know how unrealistic that is.
Thanks!
this is perfect timing.. I am very interested in this as I am discovering that most people are viewing my status updates and post from a mobile phone on facebook.
I don’t have any current experience with a plugin or website yet but I am very interested in this one as are a lot of people – hxxp://wpmobilepro.com and just today I saw this one which also interest me particularly as a real estate agent – hxxp://www.prufoxroach.com/Mobile.aspx
I’am working with a small group of customers for mobile sites.
I have 20 devices on my detection script so far an built 4 very
simple templates. They look and perform like wpmobilepro.
To be honest I got my ideas from BraveNewCode makers of
WPTouch PRO. I have a crude example of it, but I won’t post
it here, you may not want that.
Hi Dan and Mark. It looks like mobile sites are a necessity now and even more in the future. I am taking a few courses on it now. I will let you know what I learn. I definitely intend to create mobile sites for http://www.insearchofheroes.net, http://www.captainbiorhythm.com and http://www.healthydoctors.com.
